12 Jun ZINE MAKING WORKSHOP WITH KEN MERRICK
Last weekend, our rangatahi spent the day at Gribblehurst Community Hub diving into the world of zine-making with the incredible Ken Merrick. The zine has long been a tool for sharing stories outside the mainstream, so it’s always been a practice we’ve wanted to introduce to our rangatahi. Part book part artwork, a zine can hold just about anything — a memory, a joke, a drawing, a question, a dream, or an entire world folded into a few pages.
The workshop invited rangatahi to slow down and follow their curiosity. Armed with paper, scissors, glue sticks, pens, magazines, a guillotine machine and plenty of imagination, they explored the zine as a stage for storytelling. Ideas didn’t need to be polished or perfect, and through the process, rangatahi explored how visual language can communicate things that don’t always fit neatly into sentences. There was something so rewarding about watching stories emerge from scraps of paper and unexpected combinations of materials and colour.
This workshop is one of the creative threads leading into our upcoming Matariki Exhibition at Studio One Toi Tū, opening on the 25th June.. We’re so excited to share the stories, ideas, and artworks our rangatahi have been weaving together. A huge mihi to Ken for being so cool and sharing his knowledge of this unique form of storytelling.
